Unusual Gifts – Hot Water Bottles And Bronze Hare Ornaments

Unlike some furry mammals who are visible throughout the year until they hibernate, the common hot water bottle does the opposite. It remains out of sight in some cupboard, or under the bed until it senses the first signs of winter. Then as if by magic it appears! There it is at the bottom of the bed

Of course this is nonsense, but I just wanted to highlight that for most of us a hot water bottle is aesthetically-challenged objects. It has been such a long time since I bought one, I can’t even remember when it was. I am sure it would have been a last-minute idea for an elderly relative at Christmas.

As a country we still appear to have an unbreakable link to them. In fact we were once lampooned by a Hungarian born author by the name of George Mikes. He is quoted as saying “Continental people have sex lives, the English have hot water bottles”, in his funny book entitled ‘How to be an alien’. Maybe there was an element of truth about the jibe, especially in the days when the designs were extremely dour and limited. These words probably match the average continental person’s view of the way the English have sex.

Hold on a minute! Lots of things are different now. Is is really possible that these items could actually have become ‘sexy’? I found this site the other day that stocks styles and shapes that are quite different. If ever I was looking for unusual gifts to buy, things that you wouldnt normally find in the high street, this would certainly be the place to start. They have everything here, from Buddha statues to wrought iron lamps, and most things in between!

If you are primarily interested in hot water bottles, my favourites are those with a cushion shape, like the ‘Giraffe cushion’. All of these looked extremely comfortable, and probably had therapeutic values for those suffering from lower back or neck pain. For the environmentally conscious, they are also manufactured from recyclable material and are guaranteed not to fade.
